Abstract
This paper explores the flight dynamics and aerodynamic behaviour of combat aircraft at high angles of attack, focusing on supermanoeuvrability and hyper-manoeuvrability. The analysis examines static and dynamic stability, highlighting the role of aircraft configurations such as canards and Leading Edge Extensions in enhancing lift, control, and manoeuvrability under extreme conditions. These features are crucial for maintaining equilibrium and achieving controlled recovery from high angles of attack states, which are characterized by significant nonlinear aerodynamic forces and flow asymmetries. Key insights include the critical importance of pitch moment characteristics, control surface effectiveness, and the positioning of the centre of mass. Specific manoeuvres, such as the Cobra, are investigated to demonstrate how aircraft makes transition into and recovers from supercritical angle of attack while retaining stability and control. The study emphasizes the necessity of advanced control algorithms and optimize configurations to handle the dynamic challenges associated with post-stall flight. The results underscore the tactical and operational potential of high angles of attack capabilities in modern air combat, particularly in close-range engagements. By expanding the aerodynamic envelope, these features enhance agility and survivability, offering significant advantages in manoeuvrability and control flexibility.
