Abstract

Stabilization missions in the Middle East and the Balkans, as well as the current conflict in Ukraine, have highlighted the urgent need to develop vehicles for logistical support and engineering reconnaissance. The use of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, as well as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), means that soldiers engaged directly in mine clearance operations and those in convoys are exposed to direct explosive threats. Therefore, work has begun on developing a family of autonomous road-clearance vehicles comprising a base vehicle equipped with road reconnaissance equipment (including ground-penetrating radar and a metal detector) and a pressure-activated road-clearance plow. For safety reasons, the vehicle will be armored and equipped with additional ballistic protection features. A remote control system with autonomous capabilities will ensure the vehicles’ movement within the operational area. Autonomous features will also be integrated into the sensor suite.
